The EDF Innovation Lab released a report back in 2017 under the name Thermal Microgrids: The Technology, Economics and Opportunity. This report was constructed through a collaboration between the EDF Innovation Lab, Standford University and the City of Palo Alto Utilities.

The above-mentioned collaboration was part of the project Levering Experience from Standford and EDF to Develop Information and Tools for Thermal Microgrid Feasibility Assessments. This project was constructed with the intention of benefiting municipalities by providing information and tools which could aid in assessing the feasibility of the deployment of thermal microgrids.

The report covers information about the technology and economics behind thermal microgrids as well as the market the product is situated in. Next, it narrates a case-study about the Standford Energy System Innovations (SESI) project, where the Stanford campus was transformed into a campus running on renewable electricity power heat recovery with low temperature low water distribution. This was followed by two municipal case studies as well as a suite of tools for assessing feasibility for projects in this area.
