Do you aspire to be an Innovator? Not only think of new ideas but actually turning them into reality? During the Sustainable Innovation into Practice Summer Course you will work in teams of students, entrepeneurs, creative artists and companies on different innovation challenges at the festival Welcome to the Village. A festival? YES a festival! Because we believe that festivals are the perfect playgrounds for innovation. Take a look on the four challenges below.

1. How do we make renewable energy continuously available?

With an increasing amount of renewable energy we are transitioning to a selfsustaining society. Wind and sunlight provide us with energy but they are not always peresent. So how do we make sure there energy is available to us at all times (24/7)? And how will this change our behaviour?

At DORP you will work on designing a new energy system for a small scale stage. You will develop a smart grid for balancing energy and providing the stage with lighting, sound, effects, etc. during day- and nighttimes.

Team up with the people from WattSun, the Green Battery, Govert Reeskamp from Lab Vlieland and Chris McCampbell from Innofest to tackle this challenge!

2. How will a future stage interact with you?

With over 800 festivals per year events and performances are highly popular but with all new technology such as drones, virtual reality, sensors, the internet of things, etc. new experiences can be created. But how? And how will they spark exciting interaction with the audience?

At DORP you will be working in an interdisciplinary team to create a working prototype of such a future stage. The stage will need to evoke interaction with the festival visitor. Whether this is social interaction, interaction with technology or both is up to you!

Team up with the creative artists of the WERC collective, the electrical experts on site and use your fellow students as guinea pigs to tackle this challenge!

4. How to create feasible pop-up homes?

Whether you are a refugee, visitor to a mega event like the Olympics or just really in need of a home, we are in need of temporary housing. How will we deal with sudden or temporary increase of housing needs? A festival is literally a temporary city and therefor the perfect place to experiment with new types of housing. From cardboard tents to sustainable lodging or from futuristic pods to demountable constructions. What will you built?

At DORP you will think about these questions in an interdisciplinary team and make a real-scale prototype of your concept. You will be challenged to use the available local and waste materials. During the festival you will test your design by using the festival visitors as your guinea pigs!

Team up with Alex van den Belt from ONIX Architects, Eileen Blackmore from House of Design and other experts available to tackle this challenge!

4. Is bioplastic plastic?

Did you know that bioplastic can be made from sewage water? Waterboard the Brabantse Delta has already made 50kg of pellets! Bioplastic is a great material with similar but also very different properties compared to regular plastic. However, since the price is not directly competive when compared with regular plastic, they are looking for new applications for this material to build a proper business case.

In DORP you will extensively experiment with the material, develop a simple product and think of new possible ways to create a solid business case and search for the right (new) markets.

Team up with Etteke Wypkema from the Waterboard, Bernard Merkx from NRK Recycling and Omrin (the Northern waste handler) to tackle this challenge!

The S.I.P. Summerschool is a collaboration of the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus universities, Innofest, Welcome to the Village and companies.
