Bad news.. A new study of MIT showed something we intuitively knew. Clean tech did not return the Venture Capital money as the counterparts in software and to a lesser extent, medical did.
Many required large funds to move from laboratory to building a factory at commercial scale and development cycles are frequently longer than 5 years. Also pathways to a profitable exit such as an early take over or an IPO are less clear. The sector may have outlived the patience of the VC s, but certainly not its relevancy.
A new set of actors and funding models, including government support, is needed to reboot the sector.
